La Ragnaie

Located in Montalcino, La Ragnaie is a dynamic estate that has steadily risen to prominence since its acquisition by Riccardo Campinoti in 2002. The winery is situated at Passo del Lume Spento, the highest point in the appellation, where strong winds and high elevation create a cooler microclimate. In recent years, such sites have gained increasing attention as producers seek higher, cooler vineyards within Montalcino to preserve freshness and balance in a warming climate.

Originally founded in 1991, the estate expanded significantly under Riccardo Campinoti and his wife Jennifer, who acquired vineyard parcels across several of Montalcino’s most respected terroirs, including Castelnuovo dell’Abate in the southeast, Montosoli in the north, and Petroso near the town centre. Today, La Ragnaie comprises approximately 23 hectares of vineyards, many located at high elevations, allowing for a diverse and nuanced expression of the region’s terroir.

Viticulture follows a natural and sustainable approach, with no use of chemical fertilisers and minimal treatments limited to copper and sulphur. Cover crops and organic matter are used to maintain soil health and prevent erosion, particularly in the estate’s steeper vineyard sites. While not formally certified organic, the estate closely adheres to low-intervention farming principles.

In the cellar, fermentations take place in concrete using indigenous yeasts, with long but gentle macerations that preserve aromatic purity and structure. The Brunello wines are aged in large Slavonian oak casks for around 36 months, with minimal use of sulphur, allowing each vineyard parcel to express its unique identity.

The wines of La Ragnaie are known for their purity, finesse and elegance, characterised by lifted aromatics, vibrant acidity and refined tannins. Crafted with deep respect for terroir and traditional winemaking methods, they reflect the distinctive character of Montalcino’s diverse vineyard sites and the estate’s commitment to producing authentic and expressive Brunello.
